See previous note. Lack of empathy, dismissive and unable to acknowledge the pain that symptoms are causing a person is unacceptable care. To be told "we can't talk about that in this appointment" and "the internet would serve you better" felt quite hurtful. A patient should not leave an appointment feeling misunderstood, unheard, and belittled. As a psychotherapist who has provided care for patients for the last 25 years, I was seeking my own care and need to be seen and heard and I left feeling invisible and unimportant. I also left feeling as though my symptoms didn't matter as I wasn't able to discuss them nor did a I even receive a response such as, "I am so sorry you are suffering. I imagine that must be awful." I was just immediately told that I cannot talk about my symptoms in this appointment. I cried and cried for at least an hour after the appointment. Perimenopause is not something to be dismissed or minimized. My symptoms were severe and causing impact on my quality of life. Regardless of what the policies are now related to how appointments can be handled I should have at a minimum had some empathy and understanding. Dr. Scholp could have said, "I am so sorry you are suffering and there are a lot of treatment options we can talk about but unfortunately you will have to make another appointment for that." While I would have still been incredibly upset due to not having treatment offered in the appointment the warmth and understanding around needing to wait might have softened the blow. I would NOT recommend Dr. Scholp to anyone suffering with perimenopause symptoms. She clearly doesn't understand the gravity of how these symptoms impact someone. Not being able to sleep, having hourly hot flashes and gaining weight when one is eating healthy and practicing yoga and meditation daily causes one to feel incredibly depressed. I encourage Dr. Scholp to get some new training on this area of women's health care. This phase of life for some feels scary and overwhelming. I always give providers the benefit of the doubt related to maybe having an off day but this interaction doesn't warrant that. There wasn't an ounce of empathy and I was rather told to just not speak about my symptoms. Tears were already welling up in my eyes in the appointment and yet Dr. Scholp started to proceed to ask me about my Christmas plans. I understand she is human and maybe something else was going on in her life, but I would hope the next time she can be more mindful to take time away from the office to address those personal issues rather than projecting it onto her patients. I won't be returning as I felt more distress, not less, after the appointment.
