I recently visited this nurse practitioner for a referral and left feeling discouraged and uncomfortable. During the appointment, I asked a few questions about my health, including diabetes neuropathy, because I wanted to better understand my symptoms. Instead of feeling informed and supported, I felt alarmed and judged. When I asked about neuropathy, the explanation I received focused heavily on worst-case outcomes, like losing toes, without much context or reassurance. While I understand the importance of being aware of risks, the way it was communicated felt overwhelming and lacking in empathy. I also felt that assumptions were made about my health and treatment without a full understanding of my medical history or the positive changes I’ve been working on. I came in for a specific purpose—a referral—but left feeling worse than when I arrived. I believe healthcare providers should aim to educate and support patients, especially when discussing sensitive or potentially serious conditions. A more balanced, compassionate approach would have made a big difference in my experience.
