My last appointment with Dr. Douglas was the final straw. We were supposed to discuss my testosterone and estrogen levels, which were both high. I was trying to explain my history with testosterone treatment over the past decade so he could understand the full picture. I was being honest. I was not hiding anything. I was trying to do exactly what a patient is supposed to do: give my doctor accurate information so he could help me make safe, informed decisions. Instead, before he even really sat down, he told me he only had 20 minutes and that if I had a lot to discuss, I would need another appointment. That set the tone immediately. I felt rushed, dismissed, and treated like a problem before the conversation even started. When I tried to explain that my previous doctor had prescribed testosterone, he did not believe me. When I tried to show him my labs on my phone, he would not even look at them. Instead, he called my previous doctor’s office while I was sitting right there and asked if I had been a patient and whether I had been prescribed testosterone. That was humiliating. It felt like he was treating me like I was lying to him. Then he started telling me he did not trust me to take it and made comments that made me feel like he was accusing me of doing something illegal. That was completely unfair and insulting. I came in trying to get healthy, be transparent, and do things the right way. I was not doing anything unethical or illegal. Instead of listening, helping, or explaining things in a respectful way, the appointment turned into an argument. He told me I needed to sign a form, got up, and left. That is not patient care. That is not professionalism. That is a provider losing the trust of a patient who came to him for help. I feel like the empathy I was shown in the beginning was fake. When my situation became more complicated and actually required time, attention, and follow-through, I was treated like an inconvenience. I will not be returning to Dr. Douglas. The referral process has also been unacceptable. I was referred to a cardiologist, and that appointment was canceled. I was also supposed to be referred to an endocrinologist, but when I contacted them, they said they did not have the referral, even though I received a message saying the referral had gone through. After 30 days, I still have not seen either specialist, despite having symptoms serious enough to justify both referrals. Meanwhile, Optum continues to text and email me about payment. That is insulting when the care has been this poorly handled. You are quick to ask for money, but not nearly as quick to make sure a patient with legitimate health concerns is actually being helped. This entire experience made me feel like I was just another person being pushed through the system: 20-minute appointment, quick medication, rushed referral, no real follow-through, and then a bill.
