Opioid painkillers come in a variety of names and strengths. Below is a list of some of the most commonly prescribed opioids and their potencies. Milligram morphine equivalent (MME) is a value assigned to opioids to represent their relative potencies against that of 30 milligrams of morphine.
The MME of an opioid is the dose that provides about the same level of pain relief as 30 milligrams of morphine taken by mouth. Higher dosages of opioids are associated with higher risk of dependency, overdose and death.
