I can think back to being seven years old, sitting in my pediatrician's office. My sister had to go in for allergy shots, so we were there every couple of weeks. I used to watch all the comings and goings, and I always loved my pediatrician. At age seven, I told my mom, "I want to be Dr. Jerry."

My specialty is general pediatrics, but I have an additional interest in child and adolescent mental health. Unfortunately, most primary care doctors—especially pediatricians—were not trained to manage mental health. We used to refer everything out, but there is a huge shortage of mental health providers for kids and teens, made much worse by the pandemic.

About 10 to 12 years ago, I went back for additional fellowship training in child psychopharmacology. As a result, I began taking on these cases instead of referring them out—starting with ADHD and gradually expanding to anxiety and depression. Now I manage a full range of cases, and it brings tremendous satisfaction to me and to families.

In the past, families would get a referral, come back a year later, and the problem had worsened because they never got help. Being able to care for an entire family—not just one child—is the most satisfying job in medicine.
