Hi, my name is Jeff Lomerman. I'm the Chairman of Urology at Optum.

00:05.000 --> 00:27.000
I've been a urologist for 22 years. I became interested in medicine early in life—I loved biology and the sciences. But the most important part for me is that medicine allows me to do what I love while interacting with people. We hear their stories, treat their problems, and help them out.

00:27.000 --> 00:47.000
Urology is the surgical treatment of urologic diseases. We treat cancers such as prostate, bladder, and kidney cancer, as well as erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence, and kidney stones. We use minimally invasive surgery and many laser-based techniques.

00:47.000 --> 01:09.000
Some of the conditions we treat are life‑changing. Whether we are curing cancer or improving someone's quality of life, it's incredibly meaningful. We've had patients coming to our office for 20 or 30 years. The most important thing is that they feel comfortable—comfortable discussing their concerns, asking questions, bringing family, and referring neighbors and friends.

01:09.000 --> 01:34.000
My practice is limited in some sense because I'm a specialist, but having all the other specialties around me enables us to treat patients as a group. We collaborate easily—through quick messages in our shared electronic medical record or a fast phone call. Patients benefit because they get input from multiple specialties at the same time.

01:34.000 --> 01:57.000
For example, someone came in with pain, and it was thought to be a kidney stone. We weren’t sure, so we sent them to Radiology. The radiologist called me—said it wasn't a stone, but diverticulitis. Ten minutes later, the patient was in a gastroenterologist’s office, and thirty minutes after that, they were home with medication. They avoided an ER trip and received rapid, effective care.

01:57.000 --> 02:13.000
I enjoy fishing and sports. I'm a big Denver Broncos fan because that's where I grew up. I'm also certified in scuba diving, which I enjoy when I get the chance.

02:13.000 --> 02:18.000
