Insights will change health care

The human anatomy is complex. Innumerable parts working together to create a moving, living being.

At the core of the health care system lies data as intricate and extensive as our bodies. Data from medical records, doctor notes, pharmacy claims, wearable devices, patient engagement, and care management programs generating billions of details, numbers, measurements, and costs coming from hospitals, clinics, labs, insurance offices, and pharmacies.

Data that needs to be enriched, validated, and refined in order to forge a pathway to health and financial success. Technologists, data scientists, actuaries, and clinicians innovating together with one purpose: to identify cutting edge solutions that tackle health care’s biggest challenges.

Persistently knocking down roadblocks to build a path forward by working with data that is continually enriched, and uncovering insights that get smarter every day. Leveraging the latest breakthroughs in artificial intelligence to target specific needs and deliver tangible solutions. Constantly surveying the horizon to anticipate and adapt to a shifting landscape.

Sitting at the heart of the health care system is Optum, innovating to enable success in ways others simply can’t envision.

With our Crimson Market Advantage partnership, really what I'm most proud of is just the amazing transparency that we have now into our health care community when it comes to not only the business, but the clinical side of the house. We have unparalleled access to really understand who has a relationship with who, from a primary care to a procedural list, back to the primary care network.

And then looking at what procedure lists are doing what procedures at what facility. In the old

days we have hunch, right, and so now we get to take this fantastic product and validate that hunch and that has enabled us to really take planning, outreach, and our business development efforts really for that next level combining quantitative data with qualitative data that we have in the field.

When you look at business development quantifying results is very very important and Crimson Market Advantage provides a great outlet and great system to be able to look at those metrics and how we measure our success.

Collaborate with a patient-centric approach - Benevera Health

Ali Demma, RN Care Manager:

What we do is so important to close that link between the patient and all of their providers. Not everybody can find nursing, social work, pharmacy all in one location like with Benevera Health.

I’m an RN care manager and we get people set up with different kinds of doctors, we get them set up with transportation, any kind of community resources. Recently I was working with a patient – he first came across my registry because he was an inpatient hospital stay. Our registries that are produced every week come from Optum. He had been hospitalized for some cardiac issues, he was diabetic, his blood pressure was really not controlled. He had some urinary issues and ended up getting discharged with a Foley catheter.

I went to his home and helped him with the process of checking his blood sugars, got him set up with home health care which provided him the tools to take care of his catheter at home. I got him involved with a cardiologist through the hospital that he had been at. Now he’s to the point that he is well-regulated: checking his blood sugars, he gives himself insulin twice a day, his blood pressure is now stable, he’s maintaining the catheter at home by himself.

A few weeks into me working with him it came up that he had recent guardianship over his 15 year old grandson, so that’s when I got Amy involved.

Amy Brandreth, Social Worker:

He was living in a place which he couldn’t afford, it also wasn’t conducive to an elderly gentleman and he really did need to move to elderly housing. So we just worked to make sure he was able to get an exception so his grandson could stay with him. One of the other things that we helped him with was his grandson had no insurance so we helped him with the application process to get his grandson covered by Medicaid. Ali used Optum to refer the patient to me. It does help with the collaboration because we can go in to a patient’s chart and see exactly what’s been going on with the patient, what the other parties have been working on, before we do any initial outreach which is really helpful.

Ali Demma, RN Care Manager:

We would set goals by week, like to lower his A1C, maintain the patency of his catheter, or having his blood sugars between a certain range. All of our goals are all set through Optum, so we got him pretty stable to the point that he’s taking care of everything by himself now.

Without Optum, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. We can see the whole picture with the patient, from demographic information, to medications, to their other care teams outside of Benevera Health so it really helps us to care coordinate everything with that patient.

Optum Digital Research Network: A Case Study with Apellis Pharmaceuticals

Todd Johnson: Apellis is a very unique company. They’re a fast moving biotech that’s focused on very rare diseases.

Apellis first approached Optum to leverage the capabilities we were building within the Digital Research Network to help them to find patients with a disease called geographic atrophy.

Cedric Francois: Our most important discovery quite frankly, was in macular degeneration. Geographic atrophy you should think of as the Alzheimer’s of the eye. I mean, everything there had failed. It is a terrible disease for which there is no therapy.

Todd Johnson: This is a disease that causes patients in their fifties and sixties to go blind. Apellis had run a phase two study, where they experienced some real difficulties in enrollment.

Cedric Francois: We have this incredible commitment to getting new therapies to patients as quickly as possible. But we have to go through all of the right steps in order to do that in a safe way and in a way where we actually establish efficacy for these patients.

That takes a long time and shrinking that period is something that makes an enormous difference for the patients, ultimately. So we came to Optum really with the objective of identifying patients in the wide world that normally we wouldn’t have access to.

Todd Johnson: The Digital Research Network is a new paradigm for running clinical trials in a far more automated and technology enabled manner.

Cedric Francois: You take a group that gets the real drug. You take a group that gets placebo. Nobody knows who gets what. You find these patients, and that’s the trick here because finding those patients and bringing them into the study can sometimes take years. The much more logical approach is to say, “Well, how about we go and find patients first, and when have the patients and we know that these patients want to engage into your clinical trial, then let’s find a way to bring the physician in the middle.” And that was where Optum provided a really unique opportunity for us.

Todd Johnson: We’ve been working with Apellis to help to find patients within our network who have a confirmed diagnosis of geographic atrophy, and then help to make those patients and their health care providers aware that there is a trial underway that may be able to reduce the progression of their blindness, and for some patients, avoid it entirely.

Cedric Francois: The next real revelation was when we went through the database and actually looked at patients that could be part of our clinical trial based on an initial screen.

Todd Johnson: We thought we’d be able to find somewhere in the range of fourteen to fifteen thousand patients with this rare condition.

Cedric Francois: Patients that we would not in a million years have found on our own. For the first time we felt that there was a path that could help us accomplish our goals.

Todd Johnson: The Optum Digital Research Network harnesses the power of the technology and the data that we already have available to us at Optum.

Cedric Francois: Many entities try to do the same thing. What is unique to Optum, I think, is kind of the sheer magnitude of the database that you have access to, and the willingness to make that contact to the patient. And as far as I’m concerned, that is a winning strategy. That triangulation between Optum, the patient and the pharma company; I mean, the sky is the limit.

It’s a win-win for the pharma company that uses it, it’s a win for the payors ultimately and it’s a real win for the patients who get faster access to better therapies.
